At this stage the ignition should be off as you don't want the pump running. Disconnect the HPFP return from the filter housing, see attached photo, (for me no fuel came out), connect your vacuum pump to the flexible hose of the HPFP return, no need to plug the fuel return to the filter (as the pump will not be running).

The pressure regulator valve is available for about £60, there seem to be quite a few sellers, so it may be a common fault. But in this case I think it is 60% likely the problem is in the pump itself, in the other parts of the regulation system. A good diesel specialist could test and possibly repair the pump.

Turn off the vehicle and accessories. Disable the ignition system so the vehicle will only crank but not start. Connect the multimeter the same way you did above. Get a helper to turn the ignition on for 15 seconds while you watch the multimeter. If the voltage of the battery goes below 9.6 volts, your battery is weak.

Posted April 19, 2012. Hi all, I have a 2005 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI which an intermittent hard to start problem. When the problem is occurring, the engine will turn over and begin to fire but then suddenly drops off without starting. It will turn over a few more times without any sign of firing before repeating the previous. Eventually it will start.
Posted January 15, 2013. Hi all, I'm new to this forum and am despairing as I've had a run of bad luck with my focus. When driving my Focus TDCI 1.6 55 plate, I have a major issue. When driving in any gear I would put my foot down to accelerate and at about the point the turbo would boost I suffer complete power loss and the engine will stop.
Step 1. Use a digital multimeter to determine the general state of charge and condition of the battery quickly. If some power drain leaves your battery without juice, your car won't start. Turn on the headlights to remove the surface charge and connect the meter across the battery posts. You should have around 12.6 volts.

Lately every time i get gas it starts then dies, I have to pump the pedal while starting the car and then slightly rev it up, put it in gear and leave.
